Park Hyoshin & Dave Koz - The Dance 2000

We were invited to do this very famous Korean tv show on a visit to Seoul in 2000—and part of the deal was for us to do "The Dance" with one of Korea's biggest young stars, Park Hyoshin. My first thought was... oh no... that song is not easy to sing, he's just a kid and that's a BIG song — I was a bit worried. Then when we arrived at the studio that morning, I met this young man (all of maybe 19 years old), and soon realized that he spoke not a WORD of English. I was now MORE than a little concerned how this would come off on LIVE TV. The rehearsal started, the tune began... the opening riffs on the sax... then Park Hyoshin opened his mouth to sing the first line of the song. We all looked at each other in amazement. Where was this sound COMING from?! Turns out he had faithfully memorized every line in the song with all its nuances phonetically and was able to deliver what I'd consider a pretty amazing performance of "The Dance"... even Bebe Winans would've been proud of young Hyoshin! We were all blown away. Only did this once with him — but it remains one of my most favorite memories of sharing music with another artist in a foreign land. - DK.
