Putting together my first ever Greatest Hits package and preparing for our
summer tour has given me the rare chance to go back to my catalogue and revisit my past. It's been
enlightening to say the least! Checking out the videos on youtube has not
only
been a blast, but also a big help in figuring out what to play live on tour
and
to include on the Greatest Hits! I want to share with you some of my favorite clips... the oldies and the goodies, the
embarrassing and not-so-embarrassing, the amateur and professional that are up there.
I'll post a new favorite each week--hope you enjoy. In the meantime, thanks for posting the clips and see
you this summer on tour!
All my best,
DK.

"I'm Waiting for You" - a Tribute to Our Service Men and Women
We
were all taken by Donald's wonderful job with this video. Personally, I was
very honored to hear my song used in this way. Dave
I think everyone knows how I feel about Mr. Jonathan Butler...he
is truly one of the greatest talents in the music world. Singing
professionally since he was like 8 years old, growing up in Apartheid
South Africa, he has such an amazing story and journey through
life. Take a look at this interview and music segment from the
PBS show “Frequency” and learn more about this amazing human
being. DK.

Wayman Tisdale
Wayman Tisdale, Jonathan Butler, Kirk Whalum and I were invited
to Jakarta, Indonesia a few years ago to perform together in
a very special all-star show for the Java Jazz Festival. It was
one of Wayman’s favorite trips for sure—he loved it there and
used to talk about it all the time. In light of his passing,
the festival owner, Mr. Peter Gontha forwarded me this clip of
Wayman’s “Aint No Stoppin’ Us Now” shot at the festival—what
better way to celebrate WT than by seeing the man in his prime--playing,
mugging, being crazy in Indonesia...didn’t matter what part of
the world he was in, he was always Wayman! Enjoy, DK.

Frequency w/Gladys Knight
She is one of the all-time greatest singers of all-time. (yes,
I know I used the term ‘all-time’ twice—that’s how good she is!)
What a thrill to have the legendary Gladys Knight on “Frequency.”
As amazing a talent she is—she’s an even more amazing human being...and
what a career, giving SO much to the world for decades now. Take
a midnight train to Gladys and enjoy. DK.

Kool and the Gang
I had the great joy of hosting a tv show some time back called “Frequency” and on it I was able to interview a wide range of artists. On this episode, I sat down with the members of the legendary R&B group Kool & The Gang to talk about their incredible run in the music business, their past, their bright future ahead and reminisce a bit, musically and otherwise. What a great group of guys. And what a contribution they’ve made to modern music history. Enjoy, DK.

"Honey Dipped" at Pizza Express
Just returned from a fantastic week long trip to London, England where we played 6 shows at the famous Pizza Express jazz club in Soho. Brian Simpson and Nick Colionne were my cohorts on this triple bill, put together by our friend Jimi King of Sky.fm. It was a wonderful return to this amazing city, and the folks in attendance at this intimate, hot little club were some of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Every show was sold out—even before we actually arrived in London. Needless to say, we all had a blast. My heartfelt thanks to Jimi, Nick, Brian and the whole Pizza Express staff for making this trip truly memorable. This clip was the first piece of music we played on opening night...Brian, Nick, 2 wonderful UK musicians (Frank Felix on bass and Tony Mason on drums) and yours truly—an ‘English version’ of “Honeydipped”. Cheerio! DK.

You Make Me Smile (live)
This was captured during our visit to Trinidad in 1996—kind
of a different twist on this song. The video is really cool as
it shows the band and I clowning our way through that great island
country! We had a blast there—so much culture on this little
Caribbean island! Some of the best food I’ve EVER had. Anyway,
the experience made all of us smile—so, sit back and experience
a little taste of Trinidad yourself! DK.

Saxman
On our trip to Bangkok last Fall, I had
the great pleasure of meeting the most famous sax player
in all of Thailand, a wonderful and generous man who goes
by the name of “Koh Saxman”! We hung out while the band and
I were in town—he took me around to meet other sax players
and to see that incredible city. On the night of our show,
I asked him to come and sit in with us for “Saxman”... I
figured the song was written 15 years ago... but destined
to be played in this ONE moment! So very appropriate. He
killed it! I am so glad somebody caught it on video and posted
it on YouTube. He’s a wonderful player, records hit records
in Thailand and is making a great name for himself outside
of Asia too, with his new album being produced by a great
mutual friend, Darren Rahn (who produced my song “Life in
the Fast Lane”). Get a load of The Saxman!!

Live at the Strand
Talk about old video clips! This was from our very first tour in 1991...a video of the show I did along with label-mate Phil Perry was captured at this famous club in Redondo Beach, The Strand. The fact that this song, “Castle Of Dreams” was my very first hit song ever, makes this clip all the more special. Written with my older brother, Jeff...this melody for me still embodies all of those hopes and dreams I had as I started in this business—and reminds me of how truly fortunate and blessed I am to have had so many of those dreams realized over the last 20 years of making music. Enjoy.

Careless Whisper-Dave Koz ft Montell Jordan
This one brings back some great memories, too—we were making The Dance cd and I was asked to go on a writers/artists trip to Havana, Cuba where US and UK artists wrote songs with their Cuban counterparts... it was like a musical/cultural exchange — something I will NEVER forget. Anyway, on that trip were countless artists/singers/musicians and writers. One of whom was R&B singer, Montell Jordan. Montell and I immediately hit it off — we even wrote a song together on that trip. He suggested that when we got back to the States, we should collaborate on one of his favorite ‘sax songs’ and do a new, hip arrangement of it—turned out to be one of MY all-time favorite sax riff tunes, Wham’s “Careless Whisper.” So, a few weeks later, we did end up recording it, he sang the lead vocal — the album came out in 1999 and this song came out as a single the next year and actually became a modest R&B hit in 2000. Enough of a hit that Capitol, my record company, sprang for a very cool video — shot in LA at some seedy nightclub — all dressed up for our shoot. I remember it was (as all video shoots are) a VERY long day, but a ton of fun...very cool, hip people as extras. Montell was wonderful to work with and the clip still looks pretty good after all these years! Enjoy. DK.

Park Hyoshin & Dave Koz - The Dance
2000
We were invited to do this very famous Korean tv show on a visit to Seoul in 2000—and part of the deal was for us to do “The Dance” with one of Korea’s biggest young stars, Park Hyoshin. My first thought was... oh no... that song is not easy to sing, he’s just a kid and that’s a BIG song — I was a bit worried. Then when we arrived at the studio that morning, I met this young man (all of maybe 19 years old), and soon realized that he spoke not a WORD of English. I was now MORE than a little concerned how this would come off on LIVE TV. The rehearsal started, the tune began... the opening riffs on the sax... then Park Hyoshin opened his mouth to sing the first line of the song. We all looked at each other in amazement. Where was this sound COMING from?! Turns out he had faithfully memorized every line in the song with all its nuances phonetically and was able to deliver what I’d consider a pretty amazing performance of “The Dance”... even Bebe Winans would’ve been proud of young Hyoshin! We were all blown away. Only did this once with him — but it remains one of my most favorite memories of sharing music with another artist in a foreign land. - DK.

Live from Trinidad, 1996
This video from 1996 brings back so many
great memories...recorded live in concert on the island of
Trinidad this was truly the spirit behind going “Off The
Beaten Path.” I can’t say that the wardrobe choices wear
well over time, nor does the ‘soul patch’ under my lower
lip (what was I thinking?), but hopefully the music passes
the test. I gotta say, I still love the stage—decked out
by famed Trinidadian Peter Minchell—who has designed the
most outrageous and creative outfits for Carnival in Trinidad
for years and years. Seems fitting since it’s Carnival season
at the moment. Enjoy your trip back in time, Off the Beaten
Path with our Youtube video of the week, “Don’t Look Back.”

Dave and Barry Manilow - Valentine's Day Concert, Feb. 14, 2009
I am very proud of my friendship with Barry
Manilow... and no matter whether you’re a fan of his music
or not, no one can refute the fact that this guy has had
amazing relevance and sustenance in the music world for DECADES
now... and he is the consummate professional. What people
don’t necessarily know, is that the guy is an unreal musician—keenly
aware of what works and what doesn’t... he is so insanely
talented, whether arranging, writing hit songs, interpreting
standards (as he does in this video) or putting an entertaining
live show together.. .which he’s been doing for so many years
now—his musicality is tough to top and I’ve learned so much
just from being around him.
Barry asked me to join him in Nassau, (Long Island, NY)
for Valentine’s Night and play “My Funny Valentine” with
him—we’ve done it before a couple times and on TV as well...
so I was only too happy to oblige. I was thrilled when
I saw this video pop up on YouTube so we could share this
special musical moment with all those who weren’t at the
concert last Saturday night. After all, shouldn’t we spread
the Valentines mood into the following week anyway?!
Hope you enjoy this week’s very timely YouTube video on
DKTV!

Seoul, Korea in 2000
This clip brings back a great memory... of being in Seoul, Korea
in 2000 for promotion of The Dance CD. I
love Korea — the people, the food, the culture... and the
musicians! Seoul’s most popular sax player, Danny Jung was
invited by the producers of this famous TV show to join me
on this Korean song as a sax duet. It was amazing... I remember
walking out on that stage to a literal SEA of people going
nuts... it was surreal. And when Danny walked out it went
into overdrive. A ton of fun, and a great memory. I truly
love traveling to other countries to share my music — but
when I can actually work with great musicians in those countries,
that’s when it becomes really special. Danny Jung is a fantastic
saxophonist with many albums to his credit — please check
them out at his website, www.dannyjung.com.
He and I once again collaborated on our recent Asian tour last
October, and I am proud to call him a great friend. Enjoy.
